Can OpenOffice 2.2 open xlsx files?

Can OpenOffice 2.2 open xlsx files? When I try to open the file I get a huge list of available filters and I can't find xlsx in this list, but I could have missed it so I'm asking here.

Yes, there is support for xlsx files  import, but it's a new file format, and OO.o started developing this converter so it doesn't work very well at  this stage.

i have just forgotten what I had forgotten

There is a roundabout way. If you install excel viewer 2003 from microsoft, then install the 2007 compatibility pack. Double click the file you wish to open, microsoft will convert it for you and open it. The file is now saved in your local settings temp dirctory assomething like xl00001.xls. You can open this with open office.

Hope this helps

I have MS Office 2003 at work and I downloaded and installed the MS

File Compatibility Update that is supposed to allow reading the 2007 files.

I have yet to make it work.

There's a shareware program called DocXConverter that does a

pretty good job and costs $19.95, otherwise it only does part of the file so you can see it works.

There is a donation-based site (www.zamzar.com) that will convert files

for you and email them to you.  They had trouble converting the

one XLSX file I uploaded.  That wasn't a complete shock though

because by that time I had read online about how some folks

WITH Excel 2007 had trouble reading XLSX files sent to them

that were created on a different computer!

I haven't given up on Zamzar yet... if I get a

different file I'll try it again.

It appears MS has given us a box of bugs to open.

  Surprise, surprise.

In Windows, you can easily convert docx, xlsx, and pptx using Office Compatibility Pack or docx2rtf (just docx). Using the command line, you can convert with OdfConverter in Linux or Windows.

Also, here's a review of Zamzar.com converting .docx to .odt for OpenOffice.org.

Open office 3.0.1 now supports xlsx. You can also do all kinds of conversions at http://www.convert-doc.com if you don't want to install it.
