One of my male (Tom) cats brings prey home too???

The concept of a mother cat educating its young/pride makes sense, but why does my Tom Cat do it? He is between 1 & 2 years old and almost daily he brings a trophy mole or mouse back to the porch. Never eats them. It is great because I have been trying to rid the yard of moles for 2 years and he is much more efficient than traps.

Life is to short! So live it to the fullestTongue out

It is his way of say look i am doing my job and earning my keep! They do this also to make you proud. Just pat his head or scratch his ear and tell him good kitty and that you love him.!

Cats don't just do this to educate their young. They also do it to provide for their family. You're his family. He's showing you he loves you; he's bringing you lunch.

He's doing his part to take care of you, he's not eating it because it's meant to be your dinner not his.

I agree with Selena - he's proving his worth and wants your approval.

Do random acts of kindness everyday and everywhere.

As I understand it bringing prey to the owner is part of the inherent need to hunt and feed the family.....bringing it to you for approval...I agree with both Selena and Snooze....make a big fuss over his prowess and give him lots of affection and appreciation....

I have a tomcat who is a great provider , provides me with all sorts of prey at my backdoor .  He steps it up a bit in the fall , he is perparing for winter and making sure no one goes hungry .  By hunting for us they are showing love and devotion , they are taking care of the family .  It is the nature of the Cat .  There is a wonderful special on PBS that shows us our  " Little Cats "  in and around our homes are not much different than our " Big Cats "  in the wild .

Thanks everyohe.  It was my understanding that in cats, the female was the main hunter in providing for the family, not the male.  That was really the thrust of my question.

He is an interesting cat.  In addition to the hunting, he also has a need to clean everyone -- including another cat, the dog, and me.  His name: Mr. Clean!

They are gifts and have bragging rights.  My girl cat is a prolific hunter, but whether she eats them or offers them to me, she always asks for my approval.  She chirps at me with the rodent (or bird, or reptile, or amphibian, etc....) in her mouth and looks to me to praise her.  Only then will she either eat it or walk away and leave it for me.  Apparently, she does not understand, no matter how many times I try to explain it, that I do not eat chipmunk.  She loves me as her family and therefore provides for me.  It is an act of love.

Perhaps your boy cat is just really in touch with his feminine side!  Also, if there is no female cat, he would then be responsible for your care and maintenance.
