"It is impossible for a man to learn what he thinks he already knows."

Hi Bright:

I find it best to just ignore them and never make eye contact. They are looking for some sort of a response from you - don't give it to them. Just keep walking :-)

It depends on what kind of harrassment you are talking about.  If they are whistling or howling from the side of the road but pose no physical threat to you, just smile and accept the "praise" graciously but keep walking.  Some men are clueless.  They don't see their actions as predatory.  If some creep is right in your personal space and making you uncomfortable, assess your situation quickly.  Look for an escape route first, then kindly tell the person you are not interested, or that you are in a rush to get some place and put as much distance between him and you as you can.

The most important thing is to always be aware of your surroundings.  You don't have to think of every man as a predator lurking around the corner, but sometimes you can tell which types will be trouble from a distance and you can plan a route to avoid confrontation.

Live each day as if it's your last.

I agree with Blonde. Ignore that kind of attention and most often, guys will take the hint. And if they don't, be sure to carry a little thing of mace in your purse. It can never hurt to be safe rather than sorry.

“To love is to risk not being loved in return. To hope is to risk pain. To try is to risk failure, but risk must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing.”

It would be good also to take couple of lessons in self defense,I am a 6 months old Martial Artist and I can really feel the difference as far as knowing that I have option and that i can defend myself in case something happens.A women came at one of the free classes and learned basic technique in self defense for women, she was attacked one morning not long after but fought back and used one of the techniques on him, she  left the guy passed out on the street until the cops came. She simply used what we called "the hammer fist" to the face...it worked. be safe Smile
