One-way ticket to London from Australia is it permissible by customs

hello I am flying into the UK with my son - I will be staying for 6 months and then going to Europe for 3 months - I was told I cannot fly into the London airport without a return ticket - as my son and I want to get one way tickets - we are from Australia - will have any problems at the customs office when we land if our tickets are one-way to London from Australia? I will get tickets to leave whichever country we are in - possibly Belgium at the end of our stay. Is this a problem?
