I am a 47 yr. old police officer who was injured in the line of duty, forcing me to retire at 50% of my salary. Due to that back injury, I have been unable to get approved for health insurance (even if I pay the premiums). My COBRA expires soon and I am concerned I can't get approved for health insurance (other than a HIPPA plan).
Does a California city public safety organization have an obligation to make health insurance available for officers injured in the line of duty and who can't get insurance because of that injury? If not, how can the public ask officers to risk their safety to protect the public if they know the officer may lose his job AND health insurance?
