The esophageal varices are there because of your liver problems. When the liver is failing or having problems, it causes something called portal hypertension, which backs up blood and can cause the veins in your esophagus to englarge. These are the esophageal varices. They are similar to hemorrhoids. The best way to treat them is with ligation, which is a surgery that removes them using something similar to an elastic band.
