It only makes perfect sense. The connections between the United States and the Muslim world are vast and expansive. Trace Roosevelt's dealings with the Saudi's, US statehood recognition by Morocco, US recognition of Israel, previous support for the Afghani's against the Soviets...just to name a few. With the increase in Arab nationalism in combination with rising globalization, it only makes sense to cling to the continued increase in the power centers (economic, technological, etc.) that are sticking to the figurative ribs of the Middle East and outlying Muslim nations both in Africa and Southeast Asia. Do not underestimate Arab Nationalism as a concept in it's own right "a nationalist ideology which rose to prominence amongst Arabs from the early 20th century onwards with a central premise is that the peoples and countries of the Arab World are bound together by their common linguistic, cultural, and historical heritage." As a result, it's bounds are as difficult to break as American Patriotism. So in cliche' essence, if you can't beat them (which we never will) then at least befriend them, keep them close, and watch them carefully without constricting their movement to the breaking point which has occurred on numerous occasions in the past. As you have seen, we have strategic locations or allies in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Turkey, Israel, Egypt, etc. etc....it's called encirclement. In a related context, the same holds true for the Chinese...which is why we're cordial and the like, however, we have strategic outposts or friends in Australia, Guam, Hawaii, Japan, South Korea, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Thailand, Taiwan...Russia if you will...encirclement. The point to all this and what I think Obama is attempting to do, if it's not already clear, is to live and let live without comprimising our own American values and becoming vulnerable to internal or external threats, whether those be diplomatic, informational, militaristic, or economic (DIME). In reality and my final point, Muslims and Americans are similiar indeed and there is vast room for positive social outreach, understanding, and improvement on behalf of both sides. Muslims are not all extremist suicidal nutjobs, and not all Americans are capitalist, egocentric, assholes.
