Is it OK to open baby shower gifts in the privacy of your home after the shower?

We are having a baby shower for my daughter.  It will be at a very nice restaurant.  We have favors, few games, luncheon, beverage all nicely planned.  Thirty of family and friends will be in attendence.  My daughter has been to many showers some are so long she often leaves before presents are opened.  Is it OK to thank each guest for her gift and then open them in the privacy of her own home?

You could do that, but most people like to see their presents opened.

We are living pebbles cast into the pond.

We bring with us all that has shaped us...including the choices of a lifetime.

Part of the fun of giving a gift is sharing in the appreciation of seeing it opened and seeing what others have given.  This is not for comparison but, for most of us I think, just to be happy for the new mother that she is receiving these wonderful things for her baby.  Maybe it is also a bit of vicarious living for some of us -- hopes of future similar experiences or remembering those past.  So, open those presents as part of the party even if something else has to be removed from the agenda.  It's a social custom that deserves to be honored.

If she must do it, then she can say that her husband will miss out on all the fun, and she hates to have him miss out...

That said, I LOVE watching people open presents, so I'd feel kinda sad if I went to a shower and the presents were opened later at home.
