Non-Profit Native American Wilderness Bootcamps

Non-Profit Native American Wilderness Bootcamp

I am Native American. I believe that wilderness bootcamps are the way to help troubled pre-teens, teens, and young adults. I also believe in the Native American traditions, culture and values. I am convenced that a wilderness bootcamp based on Native American philosophy would be able to help trouble young people where other methods and programs have failed. I have checked into several bootcamps. They are finanically out of reach for middle and lower income families.  It is my desire to setup a non-profit wilderness bootcamp based on Native American philosophy that all troubled young people can attend regardless of their families' finanical sitution.

I have the place, 42 acres up against a national forest. I am a police officer of several years experience and have many years experience dealing with trouble young people. What I need is some one or some group to help me get information on getting grants, equipment and staff to get this project up and running. I would be good if I could locate a wilderness bootcamp that is setup similar to what I am wanting to setup and they would allow me to observe how their operation works.

I wish I had an answer for you.  Unfortunately, I do not, but I did want to say that this is a wonderful idea, and I wish you the best with it.

Dear Medicine,

   This is an outstanding idea.

You are asking several questions in one here.

As far as observing, contact Outward Bound initially:

http://www.outwardbound.org/

I do not believe that their program is based on Native American principles, but, it would give you an idea of how to set up a program of this type.  I would guess they could make other recommendations to you about other programs you could observe.  I would also check out :

  http://www.naigso-aa.org/

which is a link to the Native American Indian General Service office of Alcoholics Anonymous.  As you may know, there is an anonymous philosophy set up specifically for Native Americans based on the Good Red Road.

Being very spiritually based myself, I would say to meditate and pray about your idea.  Ask that what you need become evident to you and come onto your path. If you do not already, create and document (write) down exactly what your intent and vision is regarding this  project.  Be very thorough and exact.  Take your time until what you have written feels complete to you.  You can then do ceremony and activate this request.

I would say that you would be able to get funded by the government for a project like this.  If you have never written a grant you can take classes on how to.  If that is not something you wish to pursue, you can probably hire someone to do it for you.

I get a really good feeling about this, I have to say.

I would love to hear more.

  Elena
