I have a 97 LX450 Lexus with 124k. The original starter failed at about 90k. I replaced original starter with lifetime warranty AutoZone rebuilt. About a yr later it started making a grinding noise during startup which was off/on intermittent for about another yr. I’ve since replaced starters 3x because of the intermittent noise.
This noise has progressively moved from random intermittence to every time starter is engaged. This werring noise has always occurred at the end of each normal start cycle. Almost sounds like the starter isn't releasing quick enough and is doing a little starter run-on at the end of every start cycle (hot or cold). I’ve checked the flywheel teeth and they show no sign of wear/chips/damage & flywheel look normal. The last starter I pulled had the entry tip edge of the pinion gear chewed-up/ground off. What would cause this noise during startup? The noise only occurs at the end of each startup cycle. Would the ignition switch some how cause this possible starter run-on or is there a hanging solenoid?
I’ve checked all areas I know of but still don’t have a solid lead/direction on how to diagnosis/correct. Thanks for your assistance in this puzzle.
