Nikon 18-200 DX VR lense?

Is the new Nikon 18-200 DX VR lense worth the money and weight? Will it replace my 18-70 and 70-300 combo well enough for typical urban and travel photography?

I don't own a Nikon but from what I understand, the new Nikon 18-200 is considered a good lens for this range (albeit quite pricy).

You can find a a comprehensive review here

You will probably get better results if you already own high quality set of 18-70, 70-300 but if you are looking to carry only one lens and don’t mind spending the ~800$ for the Nikon, it may be right for you.

Here you can find a dicussion about this lens, with many reviews, links and sample photos. Some people like it, some don't. Daniel's answer basically says what they say, but you can find more opinions there.

I think it really depends on what you value more, photographic accuracy or versatility. As for myself, knowing that I am not likely to carry around 2 or 3 lenses most of time, I'd rather compromise on the quality and have a single wide-range lens. I just got a Tamron 18-200 for my Canon, and I am happy with the versatility - and the Nikon 18-200 have a much better reputation in terms of not losing photographic accuracy.

That was the long version. The short version - go get it :)

Hi Eran

I suggest you spending the time and read the following review.

I own it. It's a good all-around lens, and the VR works very well (you actually see the image stabilising when you turn it on). It's quite big and heavy, and it's slow (i.e. does not allow much light in), so I often use a simple 50mm f1.8 lens because of its light weight, very wide aperture and very high quality. I guess the 18-200 would make for a good replacement for the two lenses you've mentioned above, but take into account that it does not cover the 200-300mm range.

The 18-200 VR lens is the primary lens I use for all of my non-sports photography with my Nikon D200.  The versatility (including the vibration reduction) is well worth the price.  For me, it has replaced two lenses (18-70mm f3.5-4.5 and 70-210mm f4).  Optically, the lenses that were replaced are better.  But the ability to only carry one lens when traveling light and the VR feature are well worth the steep price.

Check out this blog post showing a photo I took using the 18-200mm lens while aboard a cruise ship.  The camera was hand held to blur the ocean of the moving ship, while maintain focus on the rain drops seen on the railing.

I owned the original Nikon 18-200 VR lens and love it.Photos are clean and crisp through the entire range. Regarding the lens creep, it is a slight issue if the lens is partially extended and pointed straight down. During "normal" use, this really has not presented itself as an issue.

i think you have a great lens already. A telephoto and another lens for close ranges and wide angles.. if you have extra money., u can buy another camera body so u wont have to change lenses in really tight situations. Its alright when shooting still life like bolts, actuators  but when ur on weddings...its hard. u got to have 2 bodies for different lenses.
