Nicotine Gum use

I am fed up with smoking.  I have to quit.  I have a box of Nicotine gum.  How soon can I begin using it, and how long should I have stopped smoking before my first piece?  Any length of time, or can I begin an hour after my last cigarette, or what?  Thanks.

I know that when my dad quit smoking the doctor told him he mustn't smoke while taking the gum. I have to admit, though, most of us felt it was just something the doctor said to convince my dad to quit, so I can't really tell you much about this.

Thank you, I know you aren't supposed to smoke while using the gum.  My brother was using it and smoked and was found deathly ill on the floor of his apartment.

I think you're not supposed to smoke because you can overdose on nicotine, but you can start using the gum the day after your last cigarette.
