Newspaper spelling errors

Some years back an american newspaper (which had been circulating for several years) suddenly and for no apparent reason, started making spelling mistakes. There was no change in staff or duties. The errors were not caused by machinery,technical changes or methodology. Most matters remained the same.It was not done on purpose. Later on they apologized and gave the explanation for the mistakes. The whole thing is rather funny and crazy. What was the explanation?

They were testing the theory that the human mind can read many mispelled words as long as the first letter and the last letter are in the proper place, but the reamaing letters of the word can be in any order, and still be read by the human mind.

There was an office party, and because of the drukeness resulting a lot of mistakes were made.

Nothing changed from before the errors, certainly regarding staff, technology, equipment. The errors went on for some time. There must be an explanation!

The majority of people,over half, do not spell correctly at times.I am assuming this misspelling was intentional as advertised.The majority would ignore said mis-spelling if it was noted. The actual noted responses  were most likely a very low number compared to actual subscription/issues sold.This is an experiment meant to stir up yhings, but likely fizzled,
