I'm a wood stove newbie, who just scavenged a wood burning stove out of a scrap yard, in order to have ANY heat (AT ALL) this winter... I'm also having to scavenge (or try to make) flue pipe, to run out of the window of my mobile home. My plan is to make an insert for my horizontally sliding window out of scrap washer/drier metal, cut a hole for the piece of (large diameter) triple wall pipe I found in the same scrap yard. Would filling the window insert with refractory mortar ($32/gallon -- OUCH!!!) be necessary, even if I just run single or double wall pipe THROUGH the triple wall pipe, with some sort of flashing on the upper / outside end? Any suggestions where I can get 45's for anywhere near cheap? Do woodstove places ever toss used (but reusable) flue pipe into their dumpsters? Any tips or links for MAKING my own flue pipes and elbows??? Please save any advice that costs more than "very little;" since, I'm having to do this as the result of not being able to afford propane this year; and, electric heaters would only result in my electricity being shut off. I'm disabled, trying to survive on under $650/mo.(less than $100/mo. of which even approaches "discretionary spending") , live in an area with ZERO heating related social services, and can get wood for free. I want to do this as safely as I can; but, I'm not willing to "just freeze" (and have all of my water lines break - along my baseboards) when the temps are in the teens at night and the 30's during the day this winter.... If you have advice that you aren't comfortable posting, you can send it to me at fedup at okplus dot com, just put "wood stove ideas" in the subject line.
