If you are low on budjet I would not wait for the new technology. I also think that HD is not so stable for shooting with camcorder. I recommend you take a look on one of the Panasonic 3CCD models. I have one and It's a great one. You can have one for less the 1000$.

Another option you may want to consider is to go with mini DVD cameras. If you are not planning on doing editing of the footage you film, the miniDVD format will allow you to just play what you shot on a regular DVD player.

If you are planning on doing editing work on your computer, then get a miniDV camera with firewire or USB 2.0 outputs, which will allow you to transfer your footage to your computer directly.
