New York City short-term apartment rentals

Are there short-term and/or holiday apartment rentals in New York city? Would it be cheaper to stay in a hostel for a month or two? I would prefer my own space, but do not know how much I can afford. What are prices like?

i love food... really any food

I think the best thing would be to look on both the facebook and craigslist for people who are looking to sublet their place.  It's certainly not a cheap place to live and can cost close to $1000 per month, but I know people who have found some great deals.  You just have to look every day and get lucky.  Good luck!
