Will that change be reflected right in front of The White House? Between The White House and the George Washington Monument proudly stands The National Christmas Tree and as pretty as it is the national Christmas Tree dose not reflect the diversity of this great nation. Might there be a day the National Hanukkah Menorah will be lit by a President of the United States of America only time will tell when change has actually come to the USA. "Tonight, for the first time in American history, the Hanukkah menorah will be lit at the White House residence," said President George W. Bush at the ceremony in which 8-year-old Talia Lefkowitz helps in lighting the menorah Dec. 10 in 2001 President Jimmy Carter walked to Lafayette Park in 1979 and lit one candle or shammash (the candle used to light other candles) in the 30-foot electric silver menorah. President Ronald Reagan visited the Rockville Jewish Community Center in 1983 and gave remarks following the lighting of the menorah. The Synagogue Council of America gave President George H.W. Bush a menorah, which was displayed at the White House in 1989. President Bush participated in a Hanukkah celebration for staff in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in 1991 and also celebrated with children and local Jewish leaders. The grand illumination of the Christmas lights on the tree by the President of the United States early in the Christmas season is an annual televised event and a month-long festivities known as the Pageant of Peace. Nearby smaller trees and other decorations leading up to the National Christmas Tree are referred to as the Pathway to Peace. Due to security concerns after an assassination attempt in March 1981, President Ronald Reagan never lit the National Christmas Tree standing on the Ellipse, but used a remote control from inside the White House. President George H. W. Bush resumed this tradition in 1989. In 1995, the National Christmas Tree was lit by solar energy for the first time. In 2007, LED Christmas lights were used, and the tree topper was refurbished to use them also. Due note no one has asked for the removal of The National Christmas Tree or it's lighting stopped.
