Neutering a Dog

My seven-year-old Golden retriever, who used to be very friendly to other dogs, has gotten very defensive with dogs his size or larger after being attacked twice in a 12-month period by two different pit bulls. He growls and threatens dogs who get close. Would neutering him at this time reduce this? Are there any downsides to neutering? Many thanks.

I'm not sure neutering your dog would reduce his defensiveness due to the fact he is not defensive only to male dogs. It is true that in general dogs become less aggressive after being neutered, but that's only if their aggression was a result of fighting over females during the breading period. The downsides of neutering is dogs changing their behavior, becoming impassive to the environment and sometimes even depressed. Those phenomenas don't occur to all dogs, but they need to be taking in mind.
