Need to loose alot of weight, don't know where to start.

so. i currently weigh 364 pounds, and i am only five feet five inches tall, i am now 19 years old.

  • in my family on my mother's side, including her, there are 9 siblings all of wich are overweight to some extent, and six of them are  morbidly obese.
  • on my fathers side which is four boys one of them is over weight and the other three including my father are morbidly obese as well.
  • on my father's side grandma was kind of chunky, but not bad and my grandpa is a stick. i don't remember my grandparents from my mother's side. all of my grandparents had/have diabetes.
  • on both sids of my family there are alot of illnesses related to obesity, like diabetes on both sides, heart issues, cancer and my father had thyroid issues that allmost killed him.

i just wanted to add that in case it's important. my questions are:

  1. do i need to see a doctor before i start loosing weight? what do i need to ask them if i do need to go, what kind of tests may they want to do, if anything?
  2. is it a lost cause? can i even loose this much weight at this point? without surgery that i don't want because it sounds really dangerous?
  3. this is of less importance but, where does all the extra skin go? will my face/body look funny? i guess i couldn't look much worse.

Congratulations to have the courage to start.  You do have some tough hurdles but it is not hopeless or impossible.

1. Yes.  You need to see a doctor and a doctor who specializes in weight issues.  You need to rule out medical causes unrelated to diet that can cause weight gain.  They will be looking for conditions that affect you metabolic rate.  Most of those tests can be done by taking blood.

2. You may be able to lose weight without surgery.  But if that surgery is life saving don't discount it.  You will only be recommended for surgery after a long evaluation period by health professionals.

3.  Since you are young if you lose weight gradually you make not have a lot of problems with sagging skin.  However, it may be that you will have folds after weight lost.  That can be corrected thru cosmetic surgery.  It is your health that is of first concern.  Lose the weight.  Tackle the cosmetic part latter.

I know your family history is discouraging.  But you can change destiny. Start with small steps.  Look at your habits and try some small changes where you can succeed.  Build on these successes.  Good luck.

good thing you are taking the first step. it appears to be heriditary with your family history. I would :

change your diet to healthy foods (no breads, fried foods or junk foods)

drink more water before any meals.

eat more green vegetables and fruits..no iceberg lettuce or salad dressings

start walking more, exercise and look into surgery as well like the LapBandLiposuction or Gastric Bypass remember just getting the surgery does not fulfill everything. you will need to change your lifestyle to becoming healthy overall.  ( eating the right foods, not starving yourself; just eat right and be more active, (walk, bike, hike, etc....you don't have to be a gym rat each day)
