The Need For More Light With No Option For A Window

Dear Kelly, I still live with my parents who built a new home. I experienced some trauma as a child and because of this I need a lot of light, thus windows, especially in a restroom. I have the master bedroom on the second level and a window could not be put in my restroom due to location of the plumbing in the wall. The guest bathroom does not have a window either due to its location. Only my parent's restroom in the master bedroom on the main level has a window. This is a problem for me, and I would like to know what you would suggest that would help me with dealing with my, for lack of a better word, fear, of not having a window in my restroom which would provide much more light? My parents even had additional windows added in my bedroom, and the 5th bedroom which I use as my computer/entertainment room. Of course, they were told anywhere they could add additional windows it was something they might want to do. And they did. It made a huge difference throughout the house, especially in our basement where the family room is located.  However, my restroom still causes me a lot of anxiety due to not having a window that provides more light and I often feel trapped. I do not know what I can do to work around this. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi, thank you for your suggestion; however, my parents asked about having skylights installed since a window was not an option before the house was completed. This was due to the roof and it sloping down over the attic space which is above my restroom. The builder was very nice about the issue; unfortunately, he said the layout and design of the house, and the roofing, it was not possible to have a window or install skylights.  My parents are at a loss for what to do, as am I. I appreciate your suggestion, though. That was my first suggestion when my parents said a window was not possible. We tried everything we knew before the house was completed.

I believe there are some new tubular skylights on the market; perhaps that would work in place of a traditional skylight?

I understand that you've received negative answers from professionals, but I'm the type of person who thinks there's an answer to everything - you just haven't found the person who can give you an answer yet!

(In other words, just because the last person you asked said it's not possible doesn't mean s/he was correct.)

P.S. Do a general search for 'non traditional skylights' and browse through the sites which come up. Perhaps you'll get some more ideas.
