There is a very known story, claimed to be true, of Nazi expedition to the south pole for exploring this "strategic resource". I really doubt the reliability of this story- There is no formal information on the researchers, the time of the expedition etc. There were some books written on that subject, but again, claims over claims with no profound evidence.
