Thanks very much to everybody who contributed to my request. You all have shown
great imagination. And with the abundance of replies, *many* more than I ever
expected, you have also shown great patience with having to read everybody's
suggestions. Since everybody on the list sees what I see, I won't go into all
the suggestions. So here are the final results. The folks in Dr. Waller's lab
did some brainstorming and have come up with the finalists. But first a warmup.

                                The Top Ten List

                          "Santa Claus pickup lines"

As presented on the 12/5/95 broadcast of LATE SHOW with DAVID LETTERMAN

10. "I'll make you shake like a bowl full of jelly"
9. "I put the 'scroo' in 'Scrooge'!"
8. "I've got something you can hang a wreath on"
7. "One hour with me honey and you'll see flyin' reindeer"
6. "Buy you a Zima?"
5. "That is a candy cane in my pocket, and I'm glad to see you"
4. "Uh-yeah, that's right, I'm Kenny Rogers"
3. "I got your stocking stuffer right here, Shirley!"
2. "Giddy-up over here and say 'Howdy' to your fat, bearded cowboy of love!"
1. "I've got an elf in my pants!"

And now for the grand finale. (drum roll, please.)

                             The Top Ten List

"Groups of Names for the Flow Cytometer Lab Computers"

10."Seven Deadly Sins" (lust pride avarice sloth)
9. "Dead rock stars" (Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Elvis, John Lennon)
8. "Varietal Wines" (Chardonnay, merlot,zinfandel, )
7. "Sexually transmitted diseases" (herpes, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphillis)
6. "Constellations" (Casiopia, Ursa, Orion Andromeda)
5. "Famous Naval Ships" (Hornet, Lexington, Bismark, Arizona)
4. "Seven Dwarfs" (Doc, sneezy, grumpy, sleepy, bashful, horny)
3. "Illicit Drugs" (Crack, Crank, Speed, Mary Jane, Qualludes)
2. "Serial Killers" (Boston Strangler, Son of Sam, Jefferey Dahmer,)
1. "Classical Composers" (Brahams, Beethoven, Bach, Mozart,)

Steve Micko

P.S. It's a toss-up between mythological figures, the Marx brothers
(Groucho, Harpo, Zeppo, Chico, Gummo and Karl) and the nine muses.

My quest is officially finished. Thanks again.

Matbe it was just recieving about 50 messages in one go that did it,
but I think that about 25% were in the latter catagory and too many
in the former.  A bit of fun is nice but I think the list is
beginning to get a bit over-trivial.  That said I find the somewhat
acrimonious and rather pointless disputes about energy transfer
semantics even worse.  This dispute has nothing to do with the
relative merits of the two instruments and everything to do with
peoples egos.  Couldn't you conduct it by Email?

Colleagues:
Thanks for your support of the cytometry net over the past year. It
sure has been a busy year in terms of numbers of messages.  Let's try
to keep the standard up a bit next year please - the "Name my Babies"
sort of got out of hand.....but I suppose all work and no play makes
Paul a dull boy or something...

Suggestions...
Any new ideas for next year? Improvements? Problems? Please
communicate these to myself or Steve Kelley.

CDROM Project....We have sumbitted our CDROM project to ISAC as an
abstract--- so now we have to make the CDROM! We intend to do this in
January & February with a cut off date of February 28 for
submissions. I don't yet know how we are going to distribute
the CDROM.....BUT if you have something that would be of value
contact me. I will put up a list of its contents periodically.

I want to acknowledge the hard work of Steve Kelley in maintaining
this site....His vision of several years ago has provided a great
service to cytometrists around the world. Thanks Steve.

Have a Happy Christmas and/or Holiday season (this is called being
"politically indirect!") and a prosperous New Year to you all.

Ugh, if you wanted to go the hellish route, why not just pick the Osmonds? I
think there were five of them, plus Marie and the second generation that's
singing its way across Utah.

Some alternatives that might be considered are:

 - the Seven Duffs from the "Duff Gardens" episode of the Simpsons (the sorter
   can be Surly).
 - Archie, Jughead, Reggie, Betty and the rest from Riverdale
 - cartoon characters (e.g. Blondie, Hagar, Dilbert)

Oh - I know the nephew of the man who unleashed the Brady Bunch on an
unsuspecting world.

Hello out there,

The Flow Cytometry Laboratory at Emory University Hospital now has a
FACScan, a FACSCalibur, a FACS Vantage, and two Macintosh
workstations. As soon as construction is finished and all instruments
are moved to their final locations, all five instruments will be
networked. We are looking for names for these nodes and would like to
have something more creative than machine A, machine B, etc.
Therefore, we are soliciting your creative energies for five names
that are somehow related. There were only four Marx brothers, only
three Stooges, and a multitude of two-character partners like Mutt and
Jeff, Tom and Jerry, Heckle and Jeckle, Bonnie and Clyde, etc., etc.
Can anyone think of a group of five?

Oh yes, I should mention that we are getting another sorter in a few
months ... How about a group of six?

Thanks in advance,

Steve Micko, who is a little punchy after a l-o-n-g sort

Hello,

Well first of all, technically speaking, there were five Marx Brothers--Groucho,
Chico, Harpo, Zeppo, and Gummo.  And when the last sorter comes you could name
it Karl.

Also, there were actually five Stooges as well--Moe, Larry, Curly, Shemp, and
Joe (I agree the last two have much less stature).  And depending on your
politics, you could name the last one Bill, or Newt,... or Karl.

Or you could go for a group of seven and leave out one, such as the Wonders of
the World, Dwarfs, Deadly Sins, Virtues, Planets (the ancient Greek system),
etc.

Subject: Re: Name my babies

Thanks very much to everybody who contributed to my request. You all have shown
great imagination. And with the abundance of replies, *many* more than I ever
expected, you have also shown great patience with having to read everybody's
suggestions. Since everybody on the list sees what I see, I won't go into all
the suggestions. So here are the final results. The folks in Dr. Waller's lab
did some brainstorming and have come up with the finalists. But first a warmup.

                                The Top Ten List

                          "Santa Claus pickup lines"

As presented on the 12/5/95 broadcast of LATE SHOW with DAVID LETTERMAN

10. "I'll make you shake like a bowl full of jelly"
9. "I put the 'scroo' in 'Scrooge'!"
8. "I've got something you can hang a wreath on"
7. "One hour with me honey and you'll see flyin' reindeer"
6. "Buy you a Zima?"
5. "That is a candy cane in my pocket, and I'm glad to see you"
4. "Uh-yeah, that's right, I'm Kenny Rogers"
3. "I got your stocking stuffer right here, Shirley!"
2. "Giddy-up over here and say 'Howdy' to your fat, bearded cowboy of love!"
1. "I've got an elf in my pants!"

And now for the grand finale. (drum roll, please.)

                             The Top Ten List

"Groups of Names for the Flow Cytometer Lab Computers"

10."Seven Deadly Sins" (lust pride avarice sloth)
9. "Dead rock stars" (Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Elvis, John Lennon)
8. "Varietal Wines" (Chardonnay, merlot,zinfandel, )
7. "Sexually transmitted diseases" (herpes, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphillis)
6. "Constellations" (Casiopia, Ursa, Orion Andromeda)
5. "Famous Naval Ships" (Hornet, Lexington, Bismark, Arizona)
4. "Seven Dwarfs" (Doc, sneezy, grumpy, sleepy, bashful, horny)
3. "Illicit Drugs" (Crack, Crank, Speed, Mary Jane, Qualludes)
2. "Serial Killers" (Boston Strangler, Son of Sam, Jefferey Dahmer,)
1. "Classical Composers" (Brahams, Beethoven, Bach, Mozart,)

Tim Murray
Hematology/Oncology
Emory University School of Medicine

Steve Micko
Emory University Hospital

P.S. It's a toss-up between mythological figures, the Marx brothers
(Groucho, Harpo, Zeppo, Chico, Gummo and Karl) and the nine muses.

My quest is officially finished. Thanks again.

S.
