Hmm... that's a good question. A good friend of mine is a musician who produces and peforms music using his computer plus a keyboard. I asked him this question a while back and he said that to him the computer was just a tool for communicating whatever's in his head and he does not consider it to be his "instument", so that's from the expert's mouth so to speak...
