Life's too short for excessive compromise... maximize everything!

Everyone's body is different and you honestly have to learn how your body responds to various types of exercise and conditioning and then develop a routine that work best for you. 

With that caveat, what has worked for me (regarding muscle stamina) is a combination of three things, the two you mentioned high repetitions and minimal rest interval, plus a wide varietion in the types of excercises that focus on the same muscle group.
