As Italy's first woman doctor and neurologist Maria Montessori brought to the understanding of the secret of childhood her unique insights both scientific and cultural. Today many educators unfamiliar with her method are struggling to reinvent the wheel of eduction. They often proudly announce as new truths practices which have been standard practice for Montessorians in schools in many coutries for nearly a century now.Broadly speaking the unique contribution  of Montessori is the recognition of the need to balance both the universal develomental needs which are the same for children in all times and cultures with the unique needs and abilities of each individual child and culture. The intense teacher preparation combined with the sytematically integrated and beautifully crafted materials in a carefully prepared environment are among the special marks of the Montessori experience. A good beginning reference book is the Secret of Childhood by Maria Montessori.
