I will not answer this question as stated.
Yes, I believe in corporeal punishment.
BUT!
It is discipline which can prevent punishment.
Below is listed the etymology of the word discipline.
derived from the Old French word descepline
derived from the Latin word disciplina (teaching, instruction, education)
derived from the Latin word discipulus (student, pupil, trainee)
derived from the Latin word discere (learn; hear, get to know)
It is the parents' responsibility to teach their children. Firmness and consistency are crucial. And in teaching them, the children should learn what behavior is expected; thereby conforming to standards that will prevent the need for punishment. The older the child becomes, the less reasons exist that would justify spanking. I believe that a bit of sensory deprivation, books excluded, will prove ever so much more effective than a good butt whuppin'.
And a final caveat before I leap off my Brillo Box. Never, ever spank a child when you are angry. A person who is not in control of himself cannot effectively discipline or punish a child for an action or attitude. He can, however, effectively express his loss of personal control by a physical attack on the child.
