What is the best (or some of the best), somewhat-new to latest games that are reminiscent of Star Control 2?

First, Star Control II had a sequel called (surprise) Star Control III

Other similar (more or less) games:

By the way, there is an open source project that ports SCII to modern operating systems.

I do know that there is a SC3, but I think most (if not all) of the SC fans agree that #3 didn't come close to the greatness of #2.  And I've already got the Ur-Quan Masters installed ;)

I've never played any of those other games, but none of them seem to quite capture the style of SC2 that I feel is a kind of "arcade RPG".  (However just glancing at Freelancer's site, it seems impossible to tell exactly what kind of game it is...)  Regardless, I'll check these out!  Thanks.  (Except for Eve Online... I admit that it seems absolutely breathtaking, but having been burned by the original Ultima Online, I swore of MMOs)

Thanks again!

Burned by Ultima Online? How? Was it too bad or too addictive?

If it's the later, then you definetly should not try Eve Online Smile

If it's the former, give EVE a try. It has 14 days free trial, you can be playing as soon as you finish the 500MB client download.

It is an RPG with some arcade and alot of strategy elements, it has good graphics, it has very deep gameplay and its Player vs. Player and political elements are unique in the MMORPG genre. The possibilities in this game are nearly limitless.

And this comes from someone who was never a space sim/sci-fi RPG fan...but this game is that good.

One warning though, if you get pass the very steep learning curve and really get into it, be prepared for long sleepless nights and a very upset significant other Laughing

There aren't really any games like it, just somewhat related. There's the already mentioned Homeworld (RTS), EVE Online (MMORPG), Freelancer (seemed kinda short though). Then there is a slightly older one (but not too outdated) which I enjoyed very much, called

Tachyon: The Fringe (you should be able to find a demo somewhere there) and the highly acclaimed X series games.

@Ultima Online: I spent a good, solid week scraping and building enough equipment to prep both my and a buddy of mine's characters for a great weekend excursion.  We were all psyched for it, and on our way, when we stumbled into a PK trap.  Long story short, both our characters were killed, all our items were lost.  We both immediately cancelled our accounts, and it dawned on me how I'd wasted real life time

and money to achieve an immense level of disappointment and frustration.  After that, although I DID at least TRY EverQuest and WoW, the desire to play MMOs has never had a hold on me.

@Tachyon & X-Series: Cool - I haven't heard of either of those two games, thanks!  I'll check them out.

I almost forgot the freely available

Privateer Remake. I haven't tried it yet myself (I'm downloading it right now), but since it's free it can't hurt :) Also that story about how one PK ruined the entire genre for you is sad, but understandable. And it's something that could happen to you in EVE Online as well (although you can stay in secure systems to avoid it, and it's not nearly as bad as in UO anyways).
