Mid-level image processing on linux

I'm using Ubuntu linux and I like it a lot, it does almost everything I need. One thing I miss is a good mid-level image processing program. I know the Gimp is quite good, but it's way too complicated for my needs and I don't like the user interface at all. I'm looking for something that's simpler to use but not too simple, something like Paint Shop Pro 7 that I used on Windows a few years ago and liked a lot.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

P.S. I prefer open source software.

Try GIMPShop (http://www.gimpshop.net/).

It's GIMP that had its interface changed to make it look and feel more like Photoshop, so Photoshop users might feel more comfortable with it.
