Amy, that's one of my favorite MJ songs and I know the answer. In her book "A Paper Life" Tatum O'Neal claims to have once had a relationship with MJ which was broken off, resulting in him writing that song.
Quoting from Tatum's book, "A Paper Life" page 100; "I absolutely adored Michael-as a friend-and I admire him to this day. I believe that he fell in love with me. I'm told that he wrote the song "She's Out Of My Life," on his album "Off The Wall," for me. What an honor.
Sorry gary The song was written by Tom Bahler after Karen Carpenter broke up with him upon discovering he had fathered a child with another woman.

Huck, or is it Doc, thanks for the straight scoop. I'll get a note off to Tatum right away. Actually, the book version sounded fishy in that Tatum was 12 and MJ was 17 and (according to her) they were friends and he attempted to have sex with her but she was too young and not interested so that ended their friendship. I guess she missed her chance.
