Michael Phelps caught smoking weed! What do you think?

Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps is caught on camera smoking marijuana. Does this tarnish his image/reputation? So far, none of his sponsors have fired him or even reprimanded him. Do you think this is right?

I think that something should be done. Nothing against smooking weed.. not my idea of fun. But it is illegal and he set a bad example for all the young people who look up to him.

When we have legal drugs like alcohol and cigarettes killing 100's of thousands per year, I think a plant that has real medical qualities and in 5,000 years there have been "Zero" deaths reported with marijuana use by itself.  It's the 21st century for Christ's sake, don't you think we should stop putting millions of pot smokers in our prisons for longer sentences than violent criminals. What a waste of human life, and we the tax payers have to foot the bill to jail these offenders. I think with 2 million plus people in our prisons, the most in any other country in the world, needs to wake up and put the right people behind bars. VIOLENT offenders!! The non-violent offenders would save the Amercian people billions in tax dollars (ObooBoo"s new Stimulus Plan....HA!). The marijuana offenders should be used to help out in their communities or other positive programs that will help out their fellow man , not make them out to be hardened criminals and destroying these peoples lives that haven't really harmed anyone.

Work hard or go home.

This is really a sad situation. The guy is only 22 or 23 years old. He basically became a superstar overnight by being the fastest male swimmer in the world and doesn't realize the depth of what role models should and should not do. His behavior is unacceptable for someone who wants to set an example to others, with his picture on Wheaties boxes and on other countless products. If he wants to act his age and smoke an illegal substance, he should not be allowed to compete. Allowing him to get away with this only sends a bad message to other young people that it's ok to smoke marijuana while pursuing other goals. It doesn't work that way. What he did was illegal and he deserves to be punished. His image is definitely ruined and I think his sponsors should fire him. I read on ESPN a few hours ago that South Carolina authorities are looking for information to see about pressing charges against him. I think they should punish him; set an example of what can happen when you do something this stupid.

To the contrary - I think it improves his image (and I don't smoke not weed nor tabaco and don't approve of smoking)

Oh please...for the love of God he's an adult and an Olympic champion. He's achieved probably most of his goals in life (at least in sports) and can do whatever he wants.  I agree that perhaps as a role model he should have been discreet, however pot should be legalized in the USA.  Did you know that pot is not illegal in MOST countries of the world??

Prez Obama should tax it and the economic problem would be solved.  There has never been in medical history EVER a reported death due to an overdose of marijuana, however ALCOHOL is a leading cause of death.

Pot should be legalized to smoke, it's better than taking Benzo's like Xanax, Valium, Ativan, etc. to relax the nerves and it's not addictive like most pills are.

Of course, like alcohol you should be of legal age to smoke pot and pharmaceuticals should sell it along with merchants.  I'm sure that there won't be all those legal disclaimers on their ads like they have for many other drugs that lead to terrible things, such as a four hour erection and possible death.

Frankly, the "unofficial" trade agreement the US has with Colombia and Mexico on marijuana should be OFFICIAL.

In fact, most political and economic problems would be solved if the US government would simply legalize and tax it.  It would also help the image of the US right now.  Look at Holland for example, you never hear of deaths due to marijuana and it's one of the most peaceful countries I've ever been to.  I didn't even feel racism when I went there (as opposed to the US) Now that the US has a colored President, let's see what happens not only with the racial issue in that country, but hopefully he will legalize the sale of marijuana.

Michael, I'm with you and I'm still very proud of you.

PS I choose not to smoke pot, but I could if I wanted to.

Thanks and good luck !!

Cool
