In general I would say that it's a personal choice and a matter of which methods are available. There are no patterns that would generalize from personality type, location, life history, etc. that I'm aware of. Quite often it just comes down to convenience. Here in Toronto (Canada) jumping in front of our subway trains is popular. There was also a favourite bridge that jumpers used until they put up a very expensive suicide barrier. There's probably a new favourite "suicide bridge" now, but there's no consensus on which one that is yet. By the way, I am speaking as someone who has a PhD in Psychology, but this is not a topic I specialize in. I do find the topic interesting, however; and, in light of a recent close friend's suicide just a few weeks ago, I'm preparing a suicide information resource web site. I have the URL... http://suicide-survivalist.org , but you won't find anything there yet. The first phase will be to "park" the site with a few useful links, while I build the site itself.

I think I heard that if someone tries to commit suicide by cutting their wrists or taking pills they don't really want to die, it's more like a call for help.

I read a research a couple of year ago claiming that 4 out of 5 suicide attempt are done by women, but the success rate are about equal. Apparently the "cry for help" suicide is a lot more common in women then it is in men. Farther more, that study said that man would usually go for suicide method that are dramatic and which are very obvious to be suicide such as - gun shot or hanging, while women tend to try and fake it as an accident - taking pills or driving off a cliff. Personally, I think that there are more types of suicide then two (cry for help or wanting to die) some of it is cry for attention, some of it is driven by mental illness and so on. I think that a lot of it just have to do with what's avaliable.

regret is full of missed opportunities.......

this is a very good question.

i do believe the cry for help and just wanting to end it are deffinitely true, someone who jumps off a building isn't as interested in help as someone taking an overdose say, but saying this when in a major state of remorse or depression logically thought would go out of the window.

so this makes it very difficult, it has been documented many times of people attempting suicide and changing their mind half way, but this is mainly due to the subcociouses basic survival instinct.

very good question.......

I totally think so! I mean, people who want to actually kill themselves, no matter what there reasons, could definitely do it. It seems so simple as murder would be. But when it comes to those that are "crying out for help" and such it seems that there were so many obvious precursors to taking it to that level that no one was around to notice and that my inherently be the problem. Everyone else! When it comes to methods I think that there are a lot of methods that do scream for a "cry for help". On the other hand there are so many that are just stupid and are more torture for the person than anything. Like I said If the person truly wanted to die, than they could do it.
