Metalic objects in microwave oven - what's the risk?

What will happen if I use a microwave oven to heat a metalic object? I've always been told that for safety reasons, heating metalic objects in a microwave oven in prohibited, but I never heard the reason for that or the consequences of such action.

Microwaves go to the center of any non-metallic object put into a microwave oven for heating. They will bounce off anything metallic. Therefore you will get some frightening sounds and lots of sparks and damage to your oven.
