Mercerized cotton, also known as pearl or pearled cotton, is cotton thread (or cotton-covered thread with a polyester core) that has been treated with sodium hydroxide (NaOH). It gives cotton a lustrous appearance and extra strength, which is way it is commonly used in socks.
