We live in very tumultuous, times. Adolescence is hard enough to navigate through, with all the raging hormones and insecurities. But then to have the added burden of uncertainty and the desire to be perfect and have a perfect life, (as portrayed in the movies) puts demands on adolescents like never before in history.
It's hard enough to cope in a world where perfection is expected, and yet wars and hypocrisy run rampant. Confusing is the understatement of the year. Is it no wonder teenagers today have no idea as to where their place in this world exists?
If you're not perfect, have perfect grades, perfect parents or a perfect life, then you must be a complete failure doomed to a life of nothing worthwhile. And if you don't have the money to attain that perfection it complicates things even further.
We live in a very shallow, uncaring world, where everything, (including people) is disposable. Why then do we question why the youth of today have nothing to live for? Everything is disposable and nothing is real. They have no foundation on which to stand, merely a picture of what they have been lead to believe is the real world. If I were a teenager today, I would be VERY confused.
The fantasy of life has far exceeded the reality. And reality becomes very dismal by comparison. Is it any wonder why the youth of today have nothing to live for? Is it any wonder why they choose to anesthetize themselves to their surroundings with drugs and alcohol? Not surprising at all. When reality becomes overwhelming, everyone takes the easy way out. It's much easier to be numb to the reality of what is really going on then to deal with it when it seems insurmountable. And when all else fails to alleviate the pain, death never fails.
Not only is mental illness on the rise in the young, but suicide as well. It's very hard to tolerate a world you don't understand and may never understand. A world built on lies, hypocrisy and fantasy is a place no one can survive.
