In most of the countries I know, the national memorial day is time to express grief.
Americans don't care about American history and all the holidays during the year that cause people to have a long weekend are seen as something to celebrate about. People take vacations then, they spend time with their families and they do what they way. There isn't a strong connection between most Americans and days like Memorial Day, Labor Day, etc. Even the 4th of July is associated with fireworks.... not the founding of the nation. It's just the way Americans are and have become. I'm not sure it will ever change.
