Signs of a damaged medial collateral ligament include ache and pain, sometimes swelling, on the inner side of the knee following some sort of impact trauma. A popping sound may be heard at the time of impact. Occasionally the meniscus may be damaged, and broken off fragments of cartilage can result in a locked knee. Use of a knee support can help prevent further injury. Pain can persist for weeks or months. Eventually scar tissue will form over the injury site to give a degree of stability.
