Marriage witness withdrawal

I have been the witness for my sister in law marriage permit at the city hall, but after that I found out that she is marrying an illegal immigrant. Ovbiously I am afraid that I might get in trouble when she decides to submit the petition for her husband's visa and my name appears in the marriage certificate. can I withdraw after I was a witness or that is not possible? should I just go to the city hall and tell them that I do not wish to be a witness for that marriage? Please advice. Sarah

You need legal, not internet advice.  But, you witnessed the "marriage"--the exchanging of vows.  You were not there to witness whether either one of the marriage partners was a U.S. citizen.  I would not go to City hall and try to remove yourself as a witness.  If you have problems with the illegal immigrant part, contact the Immigration and Naturalization service and report what you know.
