Mallard Ducks in my backyard pool that leave their dna at the bottom!

I live in southern california, and have a terrible problem with mallard ducks.  they come into my pool and deposit their waste all over the place. I cannot get it clean, let alone use the pool for swimming.  i've tried everything that people told me would 'solve' this problem....stringing shiny streamers around the pool; filling the pool with inflatable floatees....but nothing is working.  There are 2 of these mallard ducks.  They visit the pools of my neighbors as well, but somehow always seem to come onto my property in the wee hours of the morning.  Is there anything that anyone can tell me that would help this situation.  I've called fish and game, and they have nothing; i've called animal control with the same results..tomorrow i'll be calling the humane society.  If someone would just set a trap and take them to one of our nearby lakes that would be great...otherwise i'm gonna have to drain my pool and fill it with flowers! HELP!!

Jo, I wonder if you placed rubber snakes in the pool, just a thought...They would need to float...

Re: Mallard Duck problem....someone on this Q&A blog suggested salt water..I did speak to a pool maintenance guy the other day and he suggested some kind of salt/water/pool equipment/thingee..I was going to look into it.  I think the salt softens the water but the problem is that i would have to buy the whole shebang as far as the pool equipment is concerned and we replaced our old pool equipment with new about 6 years ago...I will look into it tho.  like i said, maybe i'll just fill in the pool and plant a garden...(my grandkids wont like it but what the heck!)

good morning Mr Collins,

Well if salt water is not the solution, then I just saved myself some $ by not replacing my current pool equipment! I did place some mylar balloons in the pool yesterday (now my pool area looks like a carnival)...and that seems to have worked.  The did NOT visit my pool but did visit my neighbors...Someone from the humane society phoned me and suggested a rubber ''dead mallard'' that floats and would discourage them .... so i may look into that.  A pool cover may also work .... those bubbly plastic ones...in any event trying to catch them may pose a problem since they fly off as soon as anyone comes near them.  I guess i could always get a robot and have it roam around the pool area..that might work!  Thank you for your solutions .. i really appreciate them.

jo, I have been thinking about the ducks all day and am 90% sure that a (owl) decoy will work you can call a sporting store and ask them!

God is good!

Hi there,

I live in the south and we put fake snakes in the fruit trees and in the garden to keep the birds out, so I wonder if you tried inflatable snakes to float in the pool or maybe a few to lay on the side. Hope this helps.    Junebug

Hi Junebug, Well, you would not believe it, but my son in law came over a couple of weeks ago and he strung silver streamers on my tree next to the pool, as well as on the table umbrella --  we placed them all around the umbrella and around the patio cover, as well as on those small wrought iron flag poles you stick in the ground.(I have a"hill" behind the pool and stuck a couple of them in the ground with streamers hanging on them;  and we then placed a helium filled silver balloon onto a tube we inflated and have it floating in the pool.  The sun reflects off the silver streamers and balloon, and so far (fingers crossed) they have not returned.  So i'm hoping that this will work. Of course the pool now looks like a disco room, and we have to be sure to wear our dark sunglasses so that the glare from the sun on the silver streamers doesn't burn our corneas! but the ducks (hopefully) are gone!!  Thank you so much for your answers....
