Male and female roles with child

When having a child, why is it that the woman is expected to give up her career for at least a year, and the male is able to keep working?  Why isn't it ever the other way around?

You can't fight biology. The newborn baby needs the warmth, cuddling, love and breast milk of the mother. In fact, as strong the drive of the baby for its mother so the drive of the mother to her baby. Feminism is to be valued and regarded but it does have its limitations.

The connection between a baby and his/her mother is part of nature. I think the key is to understand this and not fight it. This should be looked upon as time off for the mother instead of a burden.

Life is all about perspective and i think there are some fathers who wouldn't mind changing places with the mother.

Children are God's gift to the world...

I actually don't think females are always the ones expected to give up a career. I have friends that just recently had a baby and because the wife was/is making a significant amount of money more than the husband, he has given up his career to stay at home while she works to support the family financially. I think it really depends on the dynamic of the marital relationship as well. If my ex-wife had said to me that she wanted to pursue a career and have me stay at home with the children, I would have been agreeable to it (assuming she was able to financially support us with the salary she was earning).
