Macbook Hardrive Question

I have a macbook and I noticed that I only have about 2Gigs of free space- on a 80 Gig harddrive. I once heard that you need at least 10% free- which would be 8gigs. I have tried to delete/uninstall a few programs by dragging them from my applications folder into the trash. Does this uninstall a program or are there additional steps to take to ensure that all of the components associated with that program are deleted? I'm worried that I have a lot of extra programs and random installations on my harddrive that I do not need and I want to know how to clean them out and where to find them. Thank you!
