The "something" that was squirted into it was most likely ether starting fluid. Most diesel engine manufacturers caution against using ether, as they claim it can cause engine damage. I've used it over the years countless times, and haven't ruined a diesel yet. I don't know the specifics for your diesel, but hard starting is almost always associated with a malfunction of the glow plugs.
Diesels are very sensitive to cranking speed, and a slightly low battery could also cause it to be hard to start. Of course, it could be as simple as a dirty fuel or air filter, or a bad fuel pump, but those items can't be overcome by an ether boost at start up.
