Turn off the television and teach your children how to think.

You can do this problem, you just need to write it so that one number is directly below another.

234

789

Now, start at the right. What is 4 plus 9? Once you have determined that four plus nine equals thirteen, then you will write the three underneath the line (directly under the 9) and carry the one (that represents the 10) to the next column.

So, what is 3 plus 8 plus the 1 that you carried over? You know that eight plus one equals nine, and that nine plus three equals twelve. So, write the two underneath the line in the tens column (that's directly under the 8) and carry the one again (just as you did before).

Now, that brings us to the final column (the set of numbers all the way at the left).

What is 7 plus 2? Add that carried-over 1 to your answer. What do you get?

Aha! You thought I was going to tell you the entire thing! Nope, I've explained how it works and I think you should be able to figure it out from there.

If you can't, then another way to do it is to think in your head: What is 700 plus 200? Then take that answer and add 34 to it. Got that? Okay, now add 89 to that answer.

There you go. Problem solved.
