Low colesterole sweets

My husband's mom just had an angioplasty, after the procedure the doctor explained the situation and said she needs to avoid all kind of foods that are high colesterole and fatty. On a whole she's eating pretty healthy but she have a weakness for desserts and sweet things, especially ice cream and anything with chocolate.

I'm looking for reccomendation to what treats and sweet things she may still have and what can do to help her handle the new eating situation.

Any ideas?

You have an amazing variety now of low fat and cholesterol free ice cream, and there's always sorbet, though it's an acquired taste, so she might not go for it.

Chocolate is more difficult, but I've heard that id you're taking the really concentrated varieties, with 70% or 85% real cocoa, you get less cholesterol, and one or two bites really quite the craving , so you might want to try that.

Best of health...

30 thumbs up

You could try any of the following, though it's worth remembering that while relatively low on cholesterol they are not low on calories, so they should probably be calculated in the daily intake of her diet.

  • Angel food cake topped with fruit puree or fresh fruit slices

  • Fat free or low fat brownies, cakes, cheesecake, cupcakes, and pastries

  • Fat free or low-fat cookies like animal crackers, devil's food cookies, fig and other fruit bars, ginger snaps, and vanilla or lemon wafers.

  • Frozen low-fat or nonfat yogurt, fruit ices, ice milk, sherbet, and sorbet

  • Gelatin desserts - watch the whipped cream!

  • Graham crackers

  • Puddings made with 1% or fat free milk

Love God...live life...laugh a lot = My recipe for life.

Hi Lilly,

As a man who suffers from hypertension, watching your diet is very important. As Danny S. had suggested there are a lot of alternatives out there for folks who have to watch their cholesterol. For that sweet tooth nothing beats good old fruits to curb that hankering for a sweet. Apples, pears, pineapple ( fresh or in its own juice) strawberries are just a few that she can eat to her haerts content.

I make brownies from the box and omit the oil as they suggest and use unsweetened applesauce in its place. They come out fudgy and still sweet without the worry of all that oil. Use oils like canola and olive oil for cooking. They are soooo much better for you. Good luck! Hope she likes them.
