Low blood pressure? Panicked to pieces!

What does it mean when my b/p is really low 98?60 hr 88  and it use to be 3 weeks ago 135/72.  Had labs done, all panels came out normal. Echo done 3 months ago, fine. Dr. said it is probably just a "Vagul Vega" thing??  what is that, and it is bad, will it just go away.  I have panic and major depression for 20 years, same meds. all that time, nothing new. I did go dieting real strong and have lost 25-30 pounds in about 2 months. I am so paniced about this being something Omenus or Terminal!  I get adrenal shooting through me like a fountain..  Does or has anyone ever heard of getting real low blood pressure for any non lethal reason?   I am not tired, I have energy to work all day, stay up late, sleep about 7 hours.  I just am so scared about this that is making me panic. I take care of my Mother, who is 86, or I should say we are roomates!  Love her to pieces!! Couldn't exist if it weren't for her constant reasurrance..  Can any one help me to understand what may be happening?? Thank you, Aloysius

While a large percentage of Americans struggle with high blood pressure, some are suffering from the opposite problem--low blood pressure. This disease, which is medically known as hypotension, occurs when people's blood pressure drops below 100/70, and they begin feeling symptoms associated with low blood pressure such as dizziness or fainting. Treatment and medication is available for patients though who seek to correct their low blood pressure.

Step 1
Drink plenty of fluids. Low blood pressure occurs when the blood within the body moves slowly through the veins and arteries. This can be caused by dehydration, which thickens your blood. You can correct this by making sure you drink plenty of non-caffeinated fluids and rehydrating your body.

  • Step 2
Include more salt in your diet. Eating more salt can help correct low blood pressure by keeping more fluids in the body as salt helps retain water. This water and fluid increase raises your blood pressure just as is does for someone who suffers from high blood pressure and consumes salt.

  • Step 3
Wear compression stockings. People who suffer from low blood pressure can become dizzy or faint when they stand up. Not enough pressure is available to push the blood up from the legs to the upper body. To prevent this, you can wear compression stockings, which prevent blood from pooling in the legs. You can also move your feet and legs up and down a few times before you stand up.

  • Step 4
Review your medications with your doctor. Any time you have low blood pressure it's important to check with your doctor about any types of medication you are taking that could have an effect on blood pressure. This includes prescription medication as well as over-the-counter drugs.

  • Step 5
Use blood pressure medications. There are a number of different medications that can be used to treat and correct low blood pressure. Consult with your doctor about what medication to try.

Aloysius: my first reaction was WHOA! CALM DOWN! My doctor told me the lower your BP the better, as long as you don't pass out and can still function. I did a search on Vagul Vega and couldn't find anything.

You are under a doctors care and are taking meds. All OK. Keep in mind that BP changes from day to day and moment to moment. The fact that you lost so much weight also may be a reason why your BP is lower.

I suggest you get a BP monitor, if you haven't got one, and check your BP once a day at random times. Don't obsess over any one reading, though. If you get what you think is an abnormal reading, check it again in 5-10 minutes.

And don't worry: that will kill you more effectively than low BP.

God bless and may He give good health.

It's a normal BP response after losing 20 lb.Good work and good for your health. The only low pressure that's bad is none ( in shock !! )- Regards, Dr.D  ( M.D. )
