Lou Gehrig was not the first person to get the disease.  Around 14 people per day are diagnosed with this disease, also known as lateral scierosis.  It was only after Lou Gehrig died of this deadly and incurable disease, that the disease was renamed in America as Lou Gehrig's disease.
