No, the disease was known for about 50 years when Gehrig was diagnosed. I think it's known in this name mainly in the US.

The correct medical name for this disease is a typical medical name that is hard to pronounse and spell at least for some of us . Lou gehrig was the first famous person to be diagnosed with this disease . He was more than famous eventhough he was 36 and at the twilight of his career. This would have been in the late 1930's ,Babe Ruth was no longer around to steal his thunder and he was playing in NYC for the yankees when baseball then .ON top of all that he made a great farewill soeach although he was not a man of words,"To-today I-fell like-like the luckmest man alive"!

Lou Gehrig was not the first person to get the disease.  Around 14 people per day are diagnosed with this disease, also known as lateral scierosis.  It was only after Lou Gehrig died of this deadly and incurable disease, that the disease was renamed in America as Lou Gehrig's disease.
