Long SMS text messages

Why do mobile phones split long text messages apart and send each of them as a different message? is that a tech restriction or just greediness of mobile services providers?

Love is the battery of life....

Hi,
The cellular providers are limitted in the amount (Bits) of information they can transmit at one time.  That's the only reason.  I belive that soon the capacity / volume that they can transmit will increase and enable to sent long SMS in one go.
Best regards,
