Locating electricity in ceiling

Is there a device that would detect a metal box used for ceiling  lighting in an old house where the ceiling has been redone.  There is an extra light switch that goes nowhere.  I would like to install a ceiling fan/ light fixture, but I don't want to  wreck the ceiling searching for something that may not be there.  Please help!!

If you have attic access, this is not a problem. If  you don't then there could be a lot of dirriculties. Tell me if you do or not.

Jay,

My living room is located under my bedroom.  It has hard wood floors in it.

I would use a metal detecter. There are some stud finders that will detect current, but you are not going to have any current flowing.

You should be able to find the box without any trouble. When you cut the ceiling open, you are not going to have any guarantee that the switch line still is in the box. It probably is, but you can't be sure until you do the deed.

There are specific detectors or equipment for your concern. Better hire something that can help you, especially electrical test equipment.
