Length of time allowed to visit UK. Rent? Exchange homes?

Where would I find information regarding the length of time allowed to vacation in England/London? Also, i it possible to rent a cottage or flat for a few months as a base for that long vacation? I could use timeshare weeks, or pay for accommodations, but think renting a place might be more economical, unless it's a horrible idea, which I hope you will tell me. Is exchanging homes still an option for travelers? Thanks.

I'm not sure about rentals, etc., but the longest a person can stay in Britain w/o dealing with visas is 3 months.
