Large number of queries regarding sex

The large number of queries regarding protected and unprotected sex and questions of pregnancy seems to reflect ignorance of these subjects by many people especially young women. I think it indicates that there is a great need for sex education but the question is by whom? If parents are apparently too shy to tackle it who should and how should it be funded?

You bring up a very good point. Parents are often too shy to talk to their children about sex and there is a clear need for sex education in this country. I think that going as far as raising government funding is necessary at this point to educate both parent and child. I also think that there need to be more funds that go into the requirement of sex education in all public schools. If the government would use the media as an agent to better educate the public that would be great as well. I have seen safe sex ads on MTV and some other popularly watched cable channels. I think that it is difficult because many people do not want to expose children to sex education at too young of an age. The truth is that sex is everywhere; on t.v, in magazines, in movies etc. It is extremely difficult to avoid so why not educate young people early on?

When life presents a challenge, take your shot.

I think you make a really good point.  I, too, have wondered what the problem is.  I don't want to be judgmental, but people need to know that if they don't use condoms, they're going to get pregnant.  Maybe it is a good idea for young girls to go on the pill.  I mean, it's just a really bad idea for these young girls to be getting pregnant.  We have enough poverty and problems in our society.  What can be done to better educate the young people in our society about sex?  Maybe it's not education, maybe it's that they don't care about what they learn?  Maybe it's that people are having sex too young....

"The Only Way to Get Smarter is by Playing a Smarter Opponent"

I think the major problem is the parents.  They don't want to have the sex talk with their children and IF they finally get around to it or get up the courage than it's usually way too late.  Kids are starting to experiment at such an early age and most parents are ignorant to the fact and don't want to believe that their little 13 year old is messing around.  It's sad but true these days.  Then, when educators try to step up and have sex ed and/or pass out condoms and other information the parents go and protest.  They don't want to have the talk and they don't want educators to make the decision either.  i think that the parents just need to wise up or they're gonna be the ones raising grandkids and taking their kids to the clinic to treat STD's.

The funding and all other efforts should be focused on educating parent to become better parents.

The problem of parents that are affried of their children and are not involved in their education leads to the fact that kids are raised by TV, teachers, etc. Any fundung that would go to replacing parents will eventually deepen than gap between parents and children.

Our society is definitely   lacking sexual education. It's true it's the parents job to do it but what if most of them don't? I think it changes into a national interest. A better birth control, less diseases etc. In my opinion it should be transmitted to kids in school but not by there teachers . This subject should be explained to kids in a way they will better understand it . Lets say a computer program , a tv show . I think there should be special instructors that go all over the country explaining different subjects maybe they could be called "Sex clowns" kids will enjoy this class better then any other. I think the media today is not doing enough to promote this issue. The media today is doing the opposite. Kids learn about sex from the Internet and TV shows which are not educational and show sex as a simple fun act with no harm done.

MY inferiority complex isn't as good as YOURS

I don't think it's really the parents fault every time.Kids these days are having sex younger and younger and most of them will learn what they know about sex from their friends (which is what I did). There definately should be more sex education in schools, starting younger than 10th grade. And lets face it,kids don't want to talk to their parents about sex. It's uncomfortable and they usually just want to get it over so fast they skip vital information or the kid goes to their happy place and stops listening.

It seem that children are more and more exposed to topics of sexuality then ever before. TV and the internet gives a lot of sexual images and content, but really not enough explanations. Israel is still pretty low on teen pregnancy rates, but numbers are going up. There are a few things that can be done:

I think the internet can be a wonderful source of information for teenager who are too embarrassed to ask about sex and parents who are too embarrassed to answer. I think that a good large website with a lot of articles about different aspects of sexuality and maybe a forum or chat with specialists answering questions would be a wonderful idea.

Another idea is to hand out sex education books to children, sort of like the bible that you get in the army - every student starting junior high should get one of those basic books with explanations.

There are a couple of sex education books that were written in the USA in the past couple of years that are supposed to speak to children and teens in their own language or are meant to teach parents to talk to their children about sex, here are a couple of them:

http://www.amazon.com/Real-Truth-About-Teens-Sex/dp/B000EXYZWM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1197869761&sr=1-1

http://www.amazon.com/Unwrapped-Questions-Asked-Girls-About/dp/1577363884/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1197869761&sr=1-6

Who should found those programs? well, just like bringing a dental hygienist to talk to school kids about the importance of keeping their mouth clean, it's should be a joined effort of the ministry of education and the ministry of health.

Thank you for your original solution. The only problem is finding someone or some organization that could manage the internet site in a mature and responsible manner.

how about this - you know Pera"ch project for students? basically they volunteer for 4 hours a week in exchange for half of the university fee. They do all kind of different things - when I was a student I thought in a school for a couple of years and worked in a library for a year.

Maybe a group of students for computer programming and web designing can built and manage the site, as well as answer some of the questions.

If you want to get a project like that going, talk to the organizers of  Pera"ch project in any of the big universities.

There is money for this kind of projects, both in donations and in the budgets of the health and education ministries,  this actually will save money in the long run, abortions, as well as the paperwork involves are very expensive as well as AIDS medications and other STD treatments.
